From how to wash your curtains safely in the washing machine, to removing mould from your curtains without the washing part, continue reading, below, for how to wash your curtains with ease!
How to wash your curtains with a machine
Giving your curtains some TLC is a quick and easy chore to not only get your home looking great but smelling fantastic as well! Before anything, it’s best to check the care label on your curtains to determine whether they’re machine wash or dry clean only curtains. If the label says, ‘dry clean only’, then do try to stick to that, as this will keep your curtains safe from damage.
However, as long as your fabric and net curtains are both machine-safe, you can pop them in together to save a bit of time! Have you read the care labels? Well, let’s get started then!
1. Whether they’re on a hook or a rail, you’ll want to start with carefully taking your curtains down from their post.
2. If your curtains have mental rings then check to see if they can be removed first as they may damage your washing machine. Don’t worry if they can’t be detached – simply stick your curtains in a mesh washing bag to protect your machine!
3. Next, pop your curtains in the washer and use a mild detergent to clean them. Leave out any fabric softeners you may typically use, as they can cause the colour of your curtains to fade.
4. Lastly, select a gentle setting to wash your curtains properly and safely. If your machine doesn’t have such a setting, then change the temperature to a lukewarm 30° and the spin between 400 and 800 RPM.
5. Once the cycle is finished, make sure to dry both your fabric and net curtains naturally before hanging back up. Avoid using a dryer as this can shrink them.
6. It’s best to wash net curtains just twice a year as they are more delicate, while your regular fabric curtains are safe to be washed every 3 months, which will keep them in tip-top shape.
And you’re done - you’ve now got lovely, clean curtains!
How to clean your curtains without a machine
It’s a good idea to spruce up your curtains in between machine washes too - just a bit of extra care helps keep them looking fresh out of the wash, even if they aren’t! So, let’s take a look at three simple steps to clean your curtains that don’t involve the washing machine.
1. Remove stains and mould
Treating stains and removing mould from your curtains without washing them isn’t as tricky as you may think. In fact, you can find 2-in-1 cleaning sprays in most supermarkets that are safe for ridding both stains and mould from your curtains. Just be sure to follow the instructions on the bottle for safe use!
You can also make your own version to tackle light stains and mildew. Simply mix together equal parts water and white vinegar, pop the mixture into a spray bottle, and spritz the area affected. Then, use a soft brush to gently scrub the mildew or stain away, before letting your curtains air dry.
2. Vacuum your curtains
Dust and pet hair can cling to your curtains over time, creating a more dull surface, as well as wreaking havoc on allergies too. But a quick vacuum can have them sparkling again in no time at all! Simply use the extending hose attachment in gentle downward strokes to safely clean your curtains.
Alternatively, check out our cordless handheld vacuums! Smaller than our regular upright or stick vacuums, a handheld machine is lighter and easier to manoeuvre when cleaning blinds or curtains, vacuuming your car, or clearing dust from the corners of your ceiling.
3. Use fabric sprays
Lastly, a fabric spray is a great curtain cleaning hack to get your curtains smelling fresh as a daisy. You can find these in your local supermarket and they’re super easy to use! Just lightly spritz your curtains with a couple sprays from your chosen bottle, and voila – your curtains now give off a lovely aroma to spread throughout your home!
