How To Create a Realistic Cleaning Schedule For Your Home

Whether it’s pet hair lingering in your carpet or the seemingly never ending stack of dirty dishes, life can be messy. But life’s mucky nature doesn’t need to take over your home! Now, we know that in between errands, the 9 to 5, cooking dinners and making lunches, finding time to clean the house can feel impossible. So, that’s why we’re here to help with some simple steps for piecing together a cleaning routine you can actually stick to!

From sorting your daily cleaning checklist to tips that make your household chore list easier to tackle, continue reading, below, to get cracking on your own realistic house cleaning schedule.

1. Separate tasks into daily, weekly, and monthly

First things first, let’s divide your cleaning tasks into a monthly and weekly cleaning schedule, and create a daily cleaning checklist. Separating your tasks is useful for keeping track of what’s done and what’s left to do, and also helps to make your cleaning checklist feel that much more manageable. Of course, it’s up to you which tasks go where, but we’ve got a few suggestions to get you started.

Daily to-do list
Task Estimated time to complete
Making your bed 3 minutes
Popping a wash on 5 minutes
Quick tidy of rubbish on surfaces 10 minutes

Smaller tasks like these are easier to pick up as you go. For example, try making your bed as soon as you get up and make a habit of putting clothes straight in the basket, so they don’t collect on the floor.

Weekly to-do list
Task Estimated time to complete
Taking out the rubbish 5 minutes
Dusting furniture 10 – 15 minutes
Vacuuming your home 15 – 30 minutes

Adding tasks that take a bit more time to a weekly cleaning schedule helps stop them from becoming even bigger tasks later on. Our top tip is to dust units and shelves first, so you can clean up any dust specks lingering on the floor when you vacuum.

Monthly to-do list
Task  Estimated time to complete
Cleaning blinds and curtains 30 minutes
Clearing fridge and freezer 30 minutes
Cleaning hardwood floors 30 – 40 minutes

Add in the deep cleaning tasks to a monthly cleaning checklist. These are tasks that take the most time and may not need to be done as often as the likes of making the bed. Consider how many tasks you think you can realistically and comfortably fit into a day, week, or month. After all, you’ll know best the amount of free time you have to spare amongst work, any childcare duties, and just finding a bit of time to relax.

2. Take a room-by-room approach

With your cleaning checklists sorted, it can be useful to take it room by room when you start ticking these tasks off. Since most of our time is spent relaxing in the living room and bedroom, or hard at work in any at-home office areas, it’s a good idea to start there. After all, there’s nothing more soothing than a freshly cleaned lounge or bedroom, and as the saying goes, a clean and tidy office promotes a clean and tidy mind.

After you’ve tackled those areas, you can start looking at other spaces too – dining room, kitchen area, and the bathroom. Don’t forget any hidden closet or storage spaces as well - which can get quite dusty, so it’s a good idea to give these some TLC as part of your cleaning routine.

3. Set aside a catch-up day

Of course, there may be times where no amount of clean house prepping seems to do the trick, and you may find a task or two keeps slipping to the bottom of the to do list.   So, our top tip here is to set aside a day a week or a month to catch-up on any tasks that you haven’t had time to get to yet. Cleaning routines can be tricky to keep on top of, but by designating a catch up day, you can take the pressure off yourself a little bit.

A Sunday might be best, as you can take a look at what leftover tasks can be woven in between next week’s tasks, and what tasks you’d rather tick off before a new week starts. But if Sundays are typically a busy day for you, then feel free to choose a different one!

4. Take care of your cleaning routine tools

Lastly, it’s just as important to take the time to clean your cleaning tools. For example, the likes of vacuums and carpet cleaner machines can become less effective if filters start to get too full. When it comes to vacuum maintenance, take a look at whether you have a bagged or bagless machine. For a bagged vacuum, look to pop in a new bag every 1 – 3 months, while a bagless vacuum will need a filter clean at least once a month.

From coffee stains to makeup spills, carpets can get quite dirty, and so too can your carpet cleaner. As such, if you do use a machine to clean your carpet, make sure to empty this filter after every use to be sure it’s ready to go the next time you need it. And that’s all there is to it – you’ve now got a realistic cleaning schedule to keep your home lovely and fresh. Looking for more top tips?
